Weekend Style Guide

Just for kicks and giggles I decided to bring back a favorite of mine, my weekend style guides. I have always struggled with achieving the perfect casual outfit for my down time. I always feel more comfortable when dressed up and when the weekend rolls around I feel so sloppy. I love the idea of a basic white tee and jeans but I just don’t feel like myself in them. I am in desperate need of some inspiration. Usually, putting these mood boards together does the trick and jumpstarts my creativity. There is one store in particular that I am really drawn to at the moment. That store is Madewell. Have you been in lately? When putting together my research for this post, I gravitated to their casual designs. I feel that Madewell is the exact store I need to get me out of my weekend style rut. I mixed other brands in there as well and I am really excited about what I have found so far. If you too are seeking guidance, I hope this post gives you the ideas you’ve been looking for. So today, in lieu of my Weekly Finds, I have three fabulous outfits that will raise your weekend style game.

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

This Sunday is a really special day for me. As a new mom, it is my very first Mother’s Day. Now that I have joined this elite club, I can give even better insight on what gift to give your mom. If your mom is like mine, then she doesn’t really need anything from me, but it is always nice to give her a gift to remind her how much you care about her. If you’re buying for a new mom, anything that ties her to her baby is a great gift. A picture frame with a special captured moment would put a smile on her face. For any mom, monogramming is a great way to go. It’s personalized and shows you care. Other fun ideas that I have featured on this gift guide are gardening gloves, a fit-bit bracelet, and of course, a Diptyque candle. I feel that it’s wrong to have a gift guide without a Diptyque candle, and as always, fresh flowers and her favorite bottle of champagne are perfect. Anything that can be shared between the two of you is a good choice as well. Whatever you choose for your mom, as long as it comes from the heart, she’ll be sure to love it!

RIP:  First David Bowie, and now music icon Prince has passed away.  His music will live on forever and there will not be another like him.  Raise your hand if you are watching Purple Rain and blasting his albums all weekend.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOUR MAJESTY:  Yesterday, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated the big 9-0!  The celebration has only just begun but the best part has to be these gorgeous photos taken by Annie Leibovitz.

PIN OF THE WEEK:  Never know what shoes to wear with your outfit?  I stumbled upon this article on Pinterest, and even though it’s a bit dated, I love Who What Wear’s tips on what to wear with every shoe color.

FASHION ICON:  Grace Codington sat down with Refinery 29 about maintaining that infamous red hair, Vogue, and more!  Is it just me, or does Grace seem totally down to earth and chill?

DIY:  I stumbled on this inspiring article by Sugar & Cloth about creating a garland for over your chandelier.  I mean how beautiful is this?  And it is so perfect for spring!

FOR THE HOME:  I have wanted to do a gallery wall in my apartment for a while now.  I need to collect prints and find the best frames and layout.  Love Taza has amazing style and, after seeing her gallery wall, it makes me want one even more!

SUPPER TIME:  Cooper is almost 10 months old and solid foods are becoming a big deal in our lives.  I am constantly looking for new and fun ways to make sure Cooper gets his fruits and veggies.  I am hoping that one of these cookbooks will motivate me to start thinking outside the box for meals.

BRUNCH:  Going to brunch on the weekends in NYC is practically a requirement.  However, why go out when it could be so easy to host your own brunch?  Don’t know where to start?  Don’t worry; Glitter Guide will help you out!

Weekly Finds

The sun is shinning, it’s finally warm out, and I am planning on spending the weekend outside with my family.  Life is good.  I’ve been really busy lately, and I am looking forward to having a couple of days off from the weekly schedule.  Let me tell you, kids’ activities are time consuming and my son isn’t even a year old yet!  Over the weekend, it’s less about making sure my son is on the perfect schedule and more about having fun.  With the weather getting nicer, there will be so much more we can do outside.  I’d love to hear from my mom readers out there.  What do you like to do with your kids on the weekends?  Speaking about motherhood and activities, I have a lot less time for me.  However, in the evenings, when Cooper is asleep, I get more time for myself.  I spend a lot of it on my computer reacquainting myself with the outside world.  So, without further ado, let’s talk about the links I discovered this week.  Have a great weekend and drop by again soon for what’s new on the blog.

INSPIRATION: A Sparkle Factor’s spring style has been on fire and I’m obsessed lately.  I love everything she has been wearing.  This post for instance takes two trends I want to try: fringe and off the shoulder, and the results are fabulous.

GOOD EATS: I may not go out to dinner as often as I would like but, when I do, I want to make sure it’s great.  There are no guarantees in life, but when you go to a David Chang restaurant, you know you’re in good hands.  Have any of you tried his new restaurant, Momofuku Nishi?  It’s high on my list and I can’t wait to try it.

BOOK CLUB:  Bad news, hockey playoffs have started. This means about two months of my husband monopolizing the TV.  It’s actually a good thing because there has been nothing on that interests me.  After reading Vogue’s list of favorite books for spring, I have decided to make reading my new nightly activity.

SPRING FLOWERS:  I’ve always wanted to be the kind of woman who has fresh flowers in her home.  I buy them and throw them in a vase, but it never looks great.  Then they die so fast, it just doesn’t seem worth it.  I have decided to seek out some help. Hopefully Lauren Conrad can teach me the right tricks to a beautiful floral arrangement.

HASHTAG GOALS: Now that I am a mom, I want more than ever to become a good baker.  My mom is one of the best and it’s something I want to be able to perfect.  I love this funfetti cookie recipe from Cupcakes and Cashmere.  I plan on trying them this weekend and I hope that it’ll make me a hit at my next play date.

PIN OF THE WEEK:  I am always looking for a new podcast to listen to and this list from The Style Sprinter of the best fashion and beauty podcasts out there is exactly what I need!  Check it out and hopefully it’ll speak to you.

Currently Coveting: Blue Suede Shoes

Recently I did a bit of spring cleaning and discovered something shocking: I own only neutral colored shoes.  While looking at a sea of shoes all in black, cognac, and tan hues, I made a promise to myself that I would fix this problem.  We all get in our style ruts because we know what we like and what looks good.  However, even though black and nude shoes are classic and always in season, I want to mix it up.  I love to wear color but I usually reserve it to my clothing and not accessories.  While researching this season’s collections, I have found that there are a lot of blue shoes out there, and I was immediately inspired.  Blue is a great color, especially since I am very much drawn to the nautical look.  When styling an outfit with blue shoes, the sky is the limit.  It pairs fabulously with other colors like brown, white, blush, khaki, and coral.  It goes without saying that this color is perfect for your spring looks.  I have put together a few of my favorite blue suede shoes and would love your help in finding the perfect pair.  Once I do, I can move on to another color and broaden my horizons even more.  I have to say, I am a bit partial to the powder blue shoes but I really love all of these.  It’s so hard to decide on just one.  On another note, if you are looking for spring cleaning tips, check out this post.  It’s always a good idea to do this a couple times a year. I always feel like a new person when it’s done.   Now after organizing and purging my closet of old items, I have room for new stuff like these fabulous shoes!

3 Ways to Style A Chambray Shirt

A chambray shirt is one of those items that you must have in your closet.  I thought it would be easy to find one, but it can take awhile to find the perfect shade of chambray.  Whether you go light or dark, once you have found one, you will want to get the most wear out of it as possible. And trust me, the styling options are endless.  It can be worn with pants, skirts, shorts, and even as a layering piece over dresses.  Keep it simple by pairing it with white pants for a classic look or go outside the box and wear it with colorful patterns.  Also, I love to dress up a chambray shirt with a pencil or midi skirt.  Even though a chambray shirt can be worn all year round, during the spring/summer months are when it really shines.  It’s refreshing, light, and can be easily worn from day to night.  I can’t seem to stop purchasing this wardrobe essential, so you need to make sure you’re stocked with enough how-to options for styling it.  Ahead are three chic outfits that will make sure you get the most out of this shirt as possible.  With all of these style recycling tips, you’ll always have something to wear!

Spring Shoe Trends: Pointed Flats

I’m sure that there is more than one woman out there that admits to owning one too many pairs of shoes.  We all have our favorite styles, which is why I have a dozen booties.  One style I am seriously lacking at the moment is flats. You may not know this about me, but I have very long and narrow feet.  It can be hard for me to break in flats but, once I find ones that I love, I wear them to their breaking point.  Unfortunately at the moment, all of my favorites are too stretched out to wear and I am in the annoying situation of having to find new ones.  That brings us to today’s post.  Spring is the time to take those flats out of storage.  There is a plethora of fabulous designs that come in many different colors and patterns.  Flats are no longer your high heels’ sad little sister; these spring flats are on point and hold their own next to your sexiest pump.  I, for one, love the pointed style because they are sophisticated, chic, and comfy.  With these shoes you do not need heels to dress up an outfit.  Wear them with a flirty dress, skinny jeans, or a midi skirt.  The different outfit options are endless and I cannot wait to wear them all spring and summer long.  I rounded up my ten favorites and I can’t wait to hear from you which ones I should get.
