3 Ways To Wear A Turtleneck

Turtlenecks will never go out of style. In fact, now that fashion trends are taking a book out of the 70’s, turtlenecks are having a major moment. I, for one, am not in love with the 70’s trend. Yes I’m the one, but I am a lover of this sweater because of how practical it is and for its effortlessly chic style. Now that it’s February, a turtleneck is a very necessary item to wear, but you don’t want to get bored with it. Mix it up by tucking one into a midi skirt or layer it underneath a sleeveless dress. No matter how you style it, one thing is for sure, the turtleneck is incredibly comfy and cozy thing to wear. Whether you’re wearing a chunky turtleneck to stay warm or a sleeveless mock for a more sophisticated look, there are many different styles out there to try. Below are three different outfits to show you how to wear the turtleneck to stay warm this winter.

OVERSIZED

Really, who doesn’t love a chunky turtleneck? It’s basically a fashionable blanket with sleeves. Who wouldn’t want to wear that around all day? With this outfit, I paired the turtleneck with a mini skirt. You don’t want to wear an oversized sweater with wide legged pants. Instead, a mini skirt provides structure and balance.

SWEATER DRESS

I love wearing dresses and sometimes, during the cold months, they aren’t a very practical idea. However, thanks to this turtleneck style, you can wear a dress no matter how cold it is. Just make sure you pair it with tights so your legs stay nice and warm. Pair this turtleneck dress with a tote for the office or a clutch for happy hour. Either way, wear it with heels for a polished look.

TUCKED IN

Speaking of wide legged pants, they are a great complement to a turtleneck. The best way to pull off this style is to choose a lighter weight sweater and tuck it into these pants. Remember, a sleek turtleneck works best for layering. By tucking in a lightweight turtleneck, you can elongate your neck and arms, which will be very flattering to your figure. In addition to pants, you can also tuck a turtleneck into a midi skirt or under a sleeveless dress. But this outfit is probably my favorite.

Currently Coveting: Capes

Do you ever look at the street style section of The New York Times and wish you were in it?  Well don one of these fabulous capes and you very well could be!  I think every fall, whether they are in style or not, capes land on my currently coveting list, and this season is no exception.  When it comes to cold weathered seasons, outerwear is a key element for your daily style.  It is the first thing people see and, if you are spending most of your time outside, it could be the only thing they see.  You want your outerwear to make a statement, be unique, and keep you warm.  A cape checks all of these boxes because it is chic, mysterious, and an alluring alternative to a coat.  If you want to be on pointe with today’s trends, pair your cape with wide leg pants or a mini skirt (see last week’s post).  If you want to keep it classic, wear a classic pencil skirt or a sheath dress.  Regardless, keep proportions in mind so that you look fabulous not frumpy.  If you have a sleeveless dress and you’re afraid you won’t be warm enough, throw a light turtleneck under it to keep your arms covered.  I hope you are as excited to wear a cape this season as much as I am.  See below which capes I am currently coveting, and maybe you will find the cape of your dreams.

Fashion Must-Haves For Fall

Fashion Must-Haves For Fall

 1. CAMEL COAT:  This time of year, I always invest in a new coat. Winter can be long and cold and by the end of it you can be sick and tired of your outerwear.  That is why I like to start off fall with a new coat; it gets me excited for the colder days instead of dreading them.  If winter depresses you, good news!  Brighter colored coats are in and my favorite color of the moment is the chic and elegant camel.

2. SATCHEL:  There are no rules about what bag you should be carrying for fall, but we do tend to need more stuff this time of year.  That is why I love carrying a larger bag and I am a big fan of this satchel. It’s versatile, sleek, and perfect for carrying around and organizing my crazy life.

3. TURTLENECK:  When choosing a warm layer, make sure that a turtleneck is high on your list. Sure it’s a classics, but it seems to be a very popular choice for your go-to sweater this season. Wear it with wide leg pants, a mini skirt, or underneath a sleeveless dress.

 4. SWEATER DRESS:  I love dresses and cold weather doesn’t keep me from wearing them.  I am very happy that sweater dresses are making a comeback this season because nothing keeps you warmer than chunky knitwear.

 5. SUEDE BOOTS:  Fall and boots go together like peanut butter and jelly.  They don’t make sense without each other.  Since suede is trending right now, it only makes sense that you invest in a great pair of suede boots.  Whether they have a short or tall heel, over the knee, or a bootie, you should have at least one pair in your closet.

6.  DANGLY EARRINGS:  Out of all of the accessory options, I have always favored earrings.  This season, I am happy to say that long dangly earrings are making a comeback and I couldn’t be happier.  Dangly earrings can be delicate or make a statement.  Either way, they are a fabulous accessory that will only elevate your style.

7.  MINI SKIRT:  Because the 70’s are influencing fashion right now, mini skirts are in.  Whether you wear them flared or straight, this style is coming in all kinds of prints and colors.  Wear them with tights, tall boots, and a turtleneck and you will be a street style star in no time!

8.  WIDE LEG TROUSERS:  I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I am not happy that bellbottoms are in-style right now.  That being said, if I am going to break away from my skinny jeans, I am definitely on board with the wide legged pant trend.  They are sophisticated and elegant.  I highly suggest you get a pair in white, but if you aren’t ready for that commitment, any color will do.

Wear For Summer, Layer For Fall

Sitting at my desk with the window open on this late August day, I have realized it’s the first time I’ve thought of putting on a sweater.  Does anyone else feel the crispiness in the air today?  Even though summer isn’t officially over yet, fall shopping is all I am thinking about.  However, as much as I love all of the new knitwear, jackets, and boots that are on my radar, it’s still not cool enough to wear them.  In-between seasons can be tricky, but they don’t have to be.  When shopping, it is very important that you make sure there is versatility in your wardrobe.  The key is to be able to make a smooth and effortless transition from season to season.  There are a lot of ideas out there that you have to pack away all of your summer favorites and replace them with fall staples.   I am here to tell you that that is simply not true.  You can incorporate your summer pieces with your new fall favorites.  It’s all in the layering.  We don’t have to completely cover-up just yet and we should celebrate that.  Embrace layering and find a good balance to show off your personal style.  For today’s post, I thought it would be fun to take three summer styles and put a fall twist on them. Using three key pieces, I have given you tons of options to make the transition between summer and fall as easy as possible.

MIDI SKIRT

A midi skirt can be worn all year round.  Whether you’re wearing it with sandals to stay cool, or boots and tights to keep warm, it is an incredibly versatile style.  I have chosen a midi skirt in my favorite fall color, oxblood, and I think it pairs nicely for both seasons.

WHITE JEANS

I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but white jeans are not just for summer.  I think that not only are they the perfect jean for the warmer months, but they provide a blank canvas for your favorite fall layers.

Currently Coveting: Lace

Right now I am all about lace! I don’t know if it is the impending holiday season, or the cold weather that brings it out in me, but I can’t get enough of it. For the cold weather, I love pairing delicate lace with my cozy knitwear for a softer look. With holiday festivities approaching, a lace dress is a lovely option to be both a festive and romantic style. Pair it with velvet ant you’ll really make a statement.  Whether you wear lace head to toe, or as a peek-a-boo accent, it will elevate your look.  See my collage of my favorite lace pieces that I cannot wait to have in my closet.

Day to Night Style: Zipped Fall Sweater

In my option, fall fashion is the best.  One of my favorite things to wear is a chunky knit sweater.  If you live in a cold weather state, like I do, you find out pretty quickly how important it is.  I used to think it was more of a casual style, but after last year’s polar vortex, I found creative ways to wear it for different occasions.  It’s important to have an open mind about styling options because, after our fifth snowstorm, you get pretty sick of that sweater you were excited about when you bought it in September.   Knitwear is a cozy, warm option for a casual Saturday but, when paired with a fabulous skirt, you can elevate it for work or an evening out.  Every year I try to add a few new sweaters to my wardrobe, so I can be more excited about the impending cold weather.   But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  Right now the temperatures are cool enough for layers, but it is too soon to need our wool coats.  This is the perfect time to play around with your knitwear as an outer layer to keep warm.  Everyone needs a classic fisherman sweater, but this year I want to play with patterns and embellishments.  That is why I am in love with this new addition to my wardrobe.  The zipper detail gives it an edgy look, but can easily be paired with a feminine midi skirt.  Take a look at the ways I styled my new favorite sweater for a seasonal day to night outfit.
