How to Wear White After Labor Day

I know, I know, no white after Labor Day. Who made up that stupid rule? In my opinion, in fashion, there are no rules. Being a stylista is all about self-expression, and we shouldn’t allow anyone to tell us what we should and shouldn’t wear.   The idea of retiring your whites after Labor Day is outdated. I love wearing white in the fall and winter just as much as spring and summer.   When it comes to transitioning white into your fall wardrobe, remember that it’s all about the fabric. Lighter summer fabrics like linen, eyelet, and seersucker are too delicate. Make sure you stick to chunky wool, cashmere, and leather. Textures are key in any fall outfit especially when you wear a lighter hue. Also, mixing white with a dark contrasting color like burgundy, navy, and black will help you achieve the perfect fall look. To further prove that white should be a staple in your fall wardrobe, take a look at the three outfits I put together. Hopefully this will convince and inspire you.

Back to Work Style

Remember when the summer would end and you’d go shopping for back to school items?  You’d find colorful Lisa Frank folders, binders to hold your Teen Beat photos, and a new calendar for school assignments.  Times may have changed, but back to school shopping can translate into your adult life.  I think now is the perfect time to mix things up.  Get a new bag, retool your wardrobe, and find a fun planner.  Go all the way to finding a cute new pair of glasses if that will get you in the productive mood.  When I was a student, I always loved shopping for new school supplies and outfits.  It was a new beginning and it may be just the thing to bring some excitement to your daily work life.  After all, one thing that hasn’t changed in adulthood is that the end of summer sucks.  That’s why new shoes, bag, and a new outfit can really bring a whole new positive attitude to your life.  It’s perfect timing for talking to your boss about that big promotion at the end of the year.  All the new school gear always gave me a more positive attitude.  If that translates to the office, people will notice.  So below are the ways I think you can update your 9 to 5 uniform to hopefully make it feel less like a chore.

ADD A POP OF COLOR

An easy way to stand out in a sea of black and grey suits is to add a bit of color.  Adding a bright top or pants is an easy, eye-catching way to mix it up and be creative while on the job.

Back to Work Style

1. Banana Republic – Cascade Top | 2. Zara – Tote Bag | 3. Mango – Belted Trousers | 4. Julie Vos – Lafayette Bracelet | 5. Louise et Cie – Esperance Pump

PRINTED PENCIL SKIRT

Swap out your simple black pencil skirt for something more fun.  The slim silhouette is flattering on all body types.  It’s a timeless work wear staple for a reason, so why not update it with a colorful pattern?

MIX AND MATCH PRINTS

After you’ve mastered the last look, it’s time to take your style to the big leagues.  Mix and matching prints can be tricky and overwhelming.  But, no matter what you thought before, it’s appropriate for the work place.  Confidence and keeping the prints in the same color wheel is the trick to pulling off this look.

1. J.Crew – Polka Dot Blazer | 2. Asos – Croc Tote Bag | 3. H&M – Pencil Skirt | 4. J.Crew – Gingham Blouse | 5. Sam Edelman – Tonia Pumps

GOODBYE BLAZER, HELLO CROPPED JACKET

I’m not saying to nix a blazer all together, but every once in awhile it’s nice to update a classic design and keep things interesting.  This season, stay warm and HR appropriate by wearing a chic cropped jacket.

1. Mango – Jacquard Jacket | 2. Michael Kors – Adams Bootie | 3. Jigsaw – Waist Dress | 4. KT Collection – Long Gold Necklace | 5. Kate Spade New York – Cedar Street Maise Bag

Others to keep in mind…

Let Your Jewelry Shine

Want to keep your outfit simple?  Then focus on accessories that make a statement and will bring lots of compliments  your way.  Accessories are an inexpensive way to elevate your look.  Just don’t go overboard, but do have fun mixing and matching for more or less drama.

Carry a Statement Bag

Your bag may not come into play when sitting at your desk, but your workday starts when you leave your apartment and goes until you’re home at the end of the day.  Factor in business lunches and meetings out of the office.  Your bag makes a big impression, so you want it to be something that compliments your style. Also, if you’re not in the mood to dress up, carry a fashion forward bag and it’ll immediately transform your outfit.

Keep the Classics in Play

Like the pencil skirt, there are so many classic items that are a given when shopping for your work attire.  Blazers, skirts, trousers, and pointed-toe shoes will always look polished and professional.  They are items you should invest in and now is the perfect time to replace those worn out shoes. If you want to jazz them up, go for culottes over trousers, and a midi length instead of a pencil skirt.

Lately, I have started obsessing over all of the new fall fashions.  I may love summer, but autumn is my favorite season for clothes.  There are a lot of exciting options out there, and you get to play with layering different pieces and mixing textures.  I know we’re not close to packing away our summer wardrobe, but it’s never too early to start shopping for fall.  One item in particular that I am looking forward to wearing is a leather moto jacket.  No matter the color, leather jackets are great layering pieces that add a much needed edginess to an outfit.  I always consider my summer style as being romantic and pretty, whereas in fall, I want it to be more dramatic.  Enter the leather jacket!  Also, I am a big fan of trying to get the most out of my seasonal clothing.  You can easily keep wearing your favorite summer dress by throwing on a leather moto and, poof, you’re ready for cooler weather!   Yesterday’s post was all about essential items you need in your wardrobe for autumn, and this style definitely falls into that category.  Even though, some years, this style is more popular than others, doesn’t make it too trendy.  A leather jacket is classic and can last you many years.   Below are some of my favorite pieces and I made sure I covered several different color options.  You can easily wear a lighter color like bone or heather grey this season; the sky’s the limit!

Beat the Heat With Culottes

When you’re walking on the city streets or waiting on the subway platform for the train, it is unbearable to wear jeans.  I know that we all love jeans because they go with everything, but comfort is key for beating the heat.  I may wear a light jean jacket for those rare cool summer evenings.  Other than that, denim is high on my least-friendly-summer fabrics.  Thankfully, for those days where pants are necessary, there are several options that are lightweight and comfortable.  My favorite style at the moment is culottes.  They are chic, comfy, and provide coverage without being too constricting.  It took me awhile to get on the culottes bandwagon because I thought they aren’t for everybody.  However, I think that no matter your body type, you can pull them off with confidence if you pair them with the right ensemble.  The best way to style culottes is to wear them like an a-line skirt. Tuck in a blouse or go bold with a crop top, and then finish them off with heels for some height (especially for you petite ladies).  Don’t go too crazy; stick to basic colors like black, navy, or soft neutrals. If you’re still on the fence, try a longer pair and they will appear more like a wide legged pant.  I understand that styling these pants can be tricky, but I have your back.  Whether you’re wearing your culottes on a night out, for a weekend brunch, or to work (yes, it’s possible), here are 3 outfits to inspire you.  Summer is sticking around for another month, but who knows how long this sweltering weather will last.  One thing for sure, this pant will keep you cool, stylish, and be a great transition piece for fall.   Which one of these outfits do you like best?  I just can’t decide!

Accessories are probably one of my favorite parts of putting together an outfit.  You can wear something really simple and jazz it up with accessories to make it shine.  When it comes to jewelry, I go through stages of what different styles I prefer to wear.  Some seasons I wear only delicate pieces, whereas the next season I am all about costume jewelry.  This summer, I am obsessed with the latter.  Large chunky colorful jewels are my go-to right now, and, I got to say, they are the perfect summer look.  For me, a little white dress is practically my summer uniform.  You will definitely make a splash pairing these colorful baubles with a LWD.   Unlike the winter, when it’s hot out, we tend to wear less clothing.  When it’s colder we pile on layers and costume jewelry can be too overwhelming.  Whereas when you wear less, your accessories can really stand out.  I have a lot of favorite jewelry brands this season.  One absolute favorite is Loren Hope.  I am in love with her vibrant colored jewels.  Other standouts are of course BaubleBar and a new favorite is Peyton Williams.  I have rounded up what I am really lusting after.  I may have a few of these items in my shopping cart as we speak.  I hope you find the jewel of your dreams here.

Color Crush: Summer Blues

Yesterday I talked about my go-to summer uniform.  Well today, I want to keep the conversation going by revealing more of my fashion favorites for summer.  It’s been a while since I’ve done a Color Crush post, but this one is very appropriate for July.  So let’s talk about my current favorite hue to wear:  blue.  I mean who doesn’t love blue?  There are so many different variations that you really can’t go wrong.  Pick navy for a nautical look, powder blue for a softer feminine style, or cobalt to stand out in the crowd.  I am always putting together nautical outfits.  I haven’t met a navy striped shirt that I didn’t like.  Blue makes me happy because it is calming and peaceful.  It reminds me of water and, whether you’re at the beach or stuck in the city, it should get you in a good mood for some summer fun.  Today, I rounded up my favorite blue looks and I hope it inspires you to wear it all season long.

Memorial Day Weekend Style

You guys, Memorial Day weekend is here!   This weekend kicks off summer and it is the prefect time to break in your warm-weather wardrobe.  There are so many fabulous styles to wear this summer.  From rompers, to cropped tops, to maxi dresses, to swimwear, I am so excited to start debuting my new finds.  Whether you are going out of town or staying in the city, have fun with your style by trying something new.  I, for one, am going to give culottes a try.  I was against them last year, but trends should be revisited.  If you’re going to the beach, I suggest you break out a new swimsuit and sunnies.  Don’t break the bank, but it’s fun to update summer must-haves at the beginning of the season.  Memorial Day weekend, for many, means traveling to some fabulous beach destination.  For me, it entails chilling in the city after everyone has flown the coop.  No matter your plans, I have put together my annual MDW post so that you have all of your outfit options covered.  Here are two outfits that I think are perfect for this weekend.  Whether you are playing on the beach, lounging by the pool, or on the rooftop for cocktails.  Of course, I had to feature a white dress.  This is the color for summer and what better time to wear it?
