Currently Coveting: Elie Saab Spring 2016 Haute Couture Show

Let’s talk haute couture!  Just because this blog is about affordable style, doesn’t mean that we can’t discuss high-end fashion.  Last week, Paris held the Spring 2016 Haute Couture fashion shows.  There were a lot of designers who stood out to me.  There was the dollhouse Chanel show with textured tweed and capes and the stunning tulle gowns at Giambattista Valli.  Still, Elie Saab stood out above all the others.  If I ever receive an invite to an awards show, a girl can dream, I would want to wear a gown by Elie Saab.  The collection, inspired by India, was a work of art.  Each gown was elegant and romantic with its sequins and beadwork.  The show itself had an element of fantasy with its tropical jungle backdrop.  The models looked more like faeries gliding down the runway in gowns of gold, pink, and blue.  Perhaps with a different designer this could all look costumey, but Elie Saab’s gowns shone on the runway.  Maybe in another life I will come back as a princess and I’ll have a reason to wear one of these shimmering gowns.  Elie Saab has always been considered a favorite amongst celebrities come award season. I’m crossing my fingers that one of the nominees will wear one of these beauties at the Oscars later this month.

Do you follow the couture fashion week?  They are the most creative shows, not only with the exquisite craftsmanship of the designs, but the presentation themselves are on a whole other level.  If you would like me to cover more shows in the future, leave a comment below.

A Few of My Favorite Things For February

Slide1

I’m sitting in my apartment on this warm February morning.  Wait!  What?  It’s warm in February?  Usually this month is unbearably cold but, if the weather stays in the high 40s, low 50s, it will be quite pleasant.  I always find February to be a tedious bore, but there are still some things to look forward to.  For one, Valentine’s Day can be annoying to some but as a girly girl, I am a sucker for it.  I am that person who dresses up all in pink, eats candy hearts, and loves a romantic candlelit dinner.  What about you?  Do you like celebrating this day of love, or do you think it’s a corny holiday invented by Hallmark?  Even though I usually spend February counting down the days until March, I was still able to come up with a list of my favorite things for this month that will hopefully make it more bearable.  Just remember, even though it’s leap year, it’s still a shorter month.  Once it’s over, we’ll be one step closer to spring!  Don’t be a stranger; let me know in the comments below what your favorite things are for February.

GALENTINE’S DAY:  There are a lot of things we have thanks to the TV show Parks and Rec: a love for mini horses and Chris Pratt, but, most importantly, Galentine’s Day.  Leslie Knope created this girls only holiday as a way of taking time away from the boys in our lives for some much needed female bonding.  Whether you like Valentine’s Day or not, invite the girls over for a PJ party with spa activities, junk food, girly drinks, rom-coms and make it a girls night to remember!

LET’S PARTY: ‪On February 28th invite people over for an Oscar party!  As a film lover, I have always enjoyed every aspect of the Oscars from the red carpet show, honoring the history of film, the host’s monologue, and to see whether your predictions come true.  So pop open the champagne, fill out your ballot, and take a tip from these fun ideas on how to host the perfect Oscar party.  Check back the next day and see who made my best and worst dressed list!

FASHION MONTH:  It’s that time of year again, when we are all obsessively glued to our computers watching fashion show after fashion show.  Starting in New York and ending in Paris, I can’t wait to see what beautiful creations walk down the runway for Fall/Winter 2016!

GETAWAY:  Whether you prefer traveling by plane, train, or automobile, February will go by a lot more quickly if you have a fun trip planned.  I will be going to California later this month and I couldn’t be more excited.  I found this fun article about the best winter road trip destinations you can take.  There are so many places on this list I want to visit.  How about you?

HIDE OUT: I know I said it’s going to be a warmer month than usual, but it’s still not cold enough to enjoy drinks at a rooftop bar. A while back I posted my favorite bars to go to in NYC to escape the cold weather. I still recommend them all and think they are the perfect places to go for a drink in a cozy bar on a cold night.

COUCH POTATO:  Why leave your apartment this month if you don’t have to?  Here is a great list that breaks down all of the new movies and TV shows streaming online.  So I have to ask, are any of you going to watch Fuller House?  I was, of course,  a fan of the original, but I’m not sure this reboot is necessary.

6 Trends from NYFW Fall 2015

Last week, New York City was all abuzz with Fashion Week shows.  If you work in the fashion industry or are just a fan, it is the most exiting and important time of year.  When the designers show at Fashion Week, they are revealing their Fall 2015 collections.  This gives the retail buyers and magazine editors a preview of what’s to come.  So, let us put upcoming spring fashion on hold, and jump ahead to next fall.  My favorite season is fall which is why I look forward to this fashion week the most.  However, this year’s 70’s inspired collections had me running the other way.  I can never get behind the psychedelic prints and bell-bottom pants.  That being said, fall styles weren’t all inspired by the decade of love.  Because of the season, there was an abundance of luxurious fur, textured layers, caped outerwear, and stunning embellishments.   Unlike most seasons where rich fall colors shine, these collections presented a lot of neutrals, pastel pinks, and bright oranges.  There were five trends that resonated with me, as I saw them appearing in several shows, and hope that they will influence where fashion styles are going next fall.  Share with us which trend do you see yourself wearing!

1. Fringe

For the second year in a row, fringe has made a big statement on the runway.  Several designers featured it from subtle to dramatic details.  You may think that this trend is a tricky one to pull off; it works really well on coats, bags, and skirts.

NYFW Recap: 6 Trends for Spring/Summer 2015

New York Fashion Week may be over, but it has left us with a lot to think about and to get excited for the Spring/Summer 2015 season.  I know it’s hard to even think of what you’ll be wearing next spring when we’ve just now started buying and wearing fall styles.  But, in fashion, we are always looking ahead and, if the runway shows were any indication, the future is going to be very bright, colorful, and full of florals and gingham prints.  We do not know what winter has in store for us, but at least we know, when it’s over, we will have these gorgeous styles to wear!  Unless you watch the shows live, it can be overwhelming to keep up with eight days of shows and thousands of looks that walked down the runway.  To help out, I narrowed it down so you know exactly what trends the designers want you to wear for the Spring/Summer 2015 season.

1. GINGHAM

If you’re going to pay attention to only one trend from the Spring/Summer shows, make sure its gingham.  It appeared on almost every runway in both classic and artistic ways.  As long as it doesn’t look like I am wearing a picnic blanket, I’m on board.

NYFW: 6 Trends for Fall/Winter ’14

New York Fashion Week has come and gone and, despite some nasty weather conditions, we all made it through feeling inspired and excited for Fall/Winter 2014. This year, the designers embraced the cold weather with looks that warmed our hearts and kept our spirits high.  There was an abundance of feather details, vibrant colors, robed coats, and tons of oversized knitwear walking down the runway.  Even though we still have spring styles to look forward to, in the fashion industry, we are always looking towards the future. Here are my top 6 trends that emerged from NYFW that I, for one, cannot wait to wear when the dreaded cold returns next fall.

What’s In Your Bag? Fashion Week Essentials

It’s that time of year again….New York Fashion Week is here and it’s time we get prepared for the intense and exciting week of shows, parties, and blogging.  No matter how you participate in NYFW, you have to come prepared.  What you wear to the shows is key, but just as important, is what you carry. Although the shows for the big names are fun, my primary focus is to see the independent shows for up and coming designers, I spend a lot of time in cabs or subways going from one area of the city to the other.  That is why it is important to bring a bag full of essential items for surviving the week in style.

Slide1

  1. iPad & iPhone – Gadgets are a girl’s best friend during NYFW.  It is essential for taking pictures, notes, and for managing your social media channels.  If you have access to more than one phone take it; the more tech savvy items in your bag the better.
  2. Power Up – Trust me, the Starbucks across from Lincoln Center will be packed with NYFW goers, so it’s best bring portable battery packs to juice up your iPhone so you never miss a moment.  These colorful Jonathan Adler tech accessories are perfect for making a fashion statement.
  3. Handbag (J.Crew)– of course I can’t go on any further without mentioning the bag that will store all of these NYFW essentials.  I’d love to carry a small stylish clutch with me to the shows but let’s get real!  There is a lot to lug around, and you’ll need some extra room for free goodies.  This is a chic and stylish bag that is versatile enough to get you from day to night.
  4. Refresh Yourself – I never leave home without this YSL Radiant Concealer or a bright red lipstick, so of course they’re in my NYFW bag.  The concealer is perfect for covering up those pesky under eye dark circles and any blemishes.  And in order to stand out in the crowd and give yourself a boost of confidence, make sure your lips shine with a bright color.  With these makeup tools, you will stay radiant all day long.
  5. Chia Bar – These tasty bars are truly a natural and healthy snack that will get you through the day.  Trust me, they work.  I usually munch on one right before a SoulCycle class.   When you are going from show to you rarely have time to stop for a bite.   Chia Bars will satisfy your hunger and give you the energy and you so desperately need.
  6. Band Aid stick – You may love your pumps but they don’t always reciprocate.  You have whole week of events and that’s a lot of shoes.  So in order to prevent painful blisters, rub this stick over areas of your feet to keep them away.  It works wonders!
  7. Fold Up Flats – For those who insist on wearing heels even in the snow and ice, you must have a pair of these flats in your bag.  They are so stylish in this metallic hue. They fold up so they are easy to hide in your bag and are comfortable when running the city.  Give your feet a rest they will thank you later.
  8. Business Card Holder – One very important part of NYFW is networking.  Fashion Week is social but it’s still work.  You want to make connections and build your brand or company.  Therefore, keep your business cards in a cute and easy to find case so you are ready to represent yourself properly.  You have about 30 seconds to make a great impression so make it count!
