Effortless Summer Style: Sweaters & Shorts

One of my favorite summer outfits is a lightweight sweater over a pair of shorts.  There is something so appealing about this effortlessly relaxed style that I can’t enough of.   You may be thinking that it is way too hot and humid to be wearing long sleeves, but since everywhere you go has the AC blasting, it’s actually pretty comfortable.  This chic and simple ensemble is perfect for any summer event whether you’re going to a BBQ, throwing it over your bathing suit, or spending a weekend in the city.  Play around with the style by wearing flat gladiator sandals by day and sexy high heels by night.  Ready to try out my favorite summer outfit?  Then take a look at these sweater and short combinations I put together below.  There are so many options out there, and best thing is that you can keep wearing it in the early fall.  I can’t wait to hear how you style this look yourself!

Burberry Blanket Trend for Less

Burberry Blanket Trend

Last month’s “Currently Coveting” post featured one of my favorite items for fall:  the Burberry blanket. First spotted during New York Fashion Week last February, it has quickly become a very popular item to own. Is it a blanket, a throw, a poncho, a cape? Who knows! One thing that is certain is, with its colorful patchwork and chic monogram feature, it is the number one outerwear that I want draped around my shoulders for fall. I know for a fact that I am not alone in my obsession with this updated cape. Several celebrities (Sarah Jessica Parker, Olivia Palermo, Cara Delevingne) have been seen sporting it, personalized with their famous initials, and it’s been in several magazines including the cover of InStyle’s October issue. We may all have cape fever, but, that being said, it’s a bit overpriced for what’s essentially a blanket. Now that I have started my fall shopping, I have noticed that several stores are carrying their own style of this trend. Like Burberry’s version, they come in interesting patterns like patchwork, houndstooth, and plaid. Whether you drape it, belt it, or pin it closed, you really can’t go wrong by sporting this trend.  Because of its style, it can be worn as a coat or accessory.  Create the perfect fall outfit by pairing it with your favorite skinny jeans, a blouse, and over the knee boots.  If you think this is strictly a fall item, think again!  When we make the transition from fall to winter, drape it over your coat for a chic way to fight the frigid temperatures.  Take a look at the ponchos that I have rounded up.   Hopefully you’ll find the perfect one for you that will make you forget all about the Burberry blanket.

Casual Weekend Style

One thing that I struggle with on the weekends is putting together the perfect casual outfit.  I am always more confident when I am wearing a skirt or a dress, but I feel the pressure of having to tone it down and relax on my days off.  I find it difficult to come up with a casual style that won’t make me feel sloppy.  From running errands, to brunch, to watching football with friends, it’s important for me to look stylish while still taking it easy.  I also factor in the weather.  The leaves may be changing, but humid temperatures are annoyingly sticking around.  I want to wear boots, sweaters, and scarves, not shorts and sundresses.   One helpful way of getting prepared for dealing with this confusing weather is to use the weekend to come up with stylish layering options.  For this Weekend Style Guide, I have put together an ensemble that I think is the answer to my prayers.  It may look simple, but often times, the simplest outfits are the hardest to create!  What do you like to wear on the weekend?
