Wear Now & Later

Spring is creeping around the corner, and no one is happier about it than I am. Now, I know, we had a very mild winter, but there is nothing better than taking long walks outside, flowers blooming, and longer days. While we wait for warmer days, we need to start getting our closets prepared for a new season of fashion. All of your favorite stores are currently selling spring collections and this is the best time to shop. If you start shopping now, you’ll be sure to have a bigger selection and more sizes available to you. The only problem is that, at least where I live, it’s not quite warm enough to wear the newer clothes. March can still be cool and, as much as you want to wear lighter layers, you can’t just yet. However, I am so sick of turtlenecks, heavy coats, and tights. All I want to wear are my new purchases. That is why I am bringing back one of my favorite stories, Now vs. Later. This is when I choose three items that I love wearing for spring that, when paired well, can work for winter too. We are in that annoying transitional time of year when one day it’s hot and the next day it’s cold. The only way to survive is by layering, and I’ve become a pro at it.

WHITE JEANS

White jeans are my favorite because they can be paired with any color and style top. I really can’t wait any longer to wear them, so, before it gets warm, pair these jeans with a chunky sweater and your favorite jacket. Then, when the weather changes, wear it with a light blouse and sandals for a softer look.

GINGHAM DRESS
I recently bought this dress and I want to start wearing it as soon as possible. For the now outfit I styled it with a heavy coat, scarf, and booties. This will make you more comfortable until you can ditch the layers for flats and a lighter trench. If you’re still in need of layers, try wearing it over a light turtleneck.

Wear Now & Later

1. H&M – Jacket | 2. Charles & Keith – Slouchy Bag | 3. Madewell – Checked Shirt Dress | 4. Humble Chic – Infinity Scarf | 5. Nine West – Bootie

MIDI SKIRT

I love this floral midi skirt from Zara and I have a feeling that this won’t be its last appearance on the blog. There are so many different ways I want to wear this for spring: with a blouse, flats, heels, a chambray shirt. The list just goes on and on. But, in the meantime, a sweater or turtleneck would look great with it. I suggest you find some rich colors for some contrast, either with a navy bag or chocolate brown booties.

3 Ways To Wear A Turtleneck

Turtlenecks will never go out of style. In fact, now that fashion trends are taking a book out of the 70’s, turtlenecks are having a major moment. I, for one, am not in love with the 70’s trend. Yes I’m the one, but I am a lover of this sweater because of how practical it is and for its effortlessly chic style. Now that it’s February, a turtleneck is a very necessary item to wear, but you don’t want to get bored with it. Mix it up by tucking one into a midi skirt or layer it underneath a sleeveless dress. No matter how you style it, one thing is for sure, the turtleneck is incredibly comfy and cozy thing to wear. Whether you’re wearing a chunky turtleneck to stay warm or a sleeveless mock for a more sophisticated look, there are many different styles out there to try. Below are three different outfits to show you how to wear the turtleneck to stay warm this winter.

OVERSIZED

Really, who doesn’t love a chunky turtleneck? It’s basically a fashionable blanket with sleeves. Who wouldn’t want to wear that around all day? With this outfit, I paired the turtleneck with a mini skirt. You don’t want to wear an oversized sweater with wide legged pants. Instead, a mini skirt provides structure and balance.

SWEATER DRESS

I love wearing dresses and sometimes, during the cold months, they aren’t a very practical idea. However, thanks to this turtleneck style, you can wear a dress no matter how cold it is. Just make sure you pair it with tights so your legs stay nice and warm. Pair this turtleneck dress with a tote for the office or a clutch for happy hour. Either way, wear it with heels for a polished look.

TUCKED IN

Speaking of wide legged pants, they are a great complement to a turtleneck. The best way to pull off this style is to choose a lighter weight sweater and tuck it into these pants. Remember, a sleek turtleneck works best for layering. By tucking in a lightweight turtleneck, you can elongate your neck and arms, which will be very flattering to your figure. In addition to pants, you can also tuck a turtleneck into a midi skirt or under a sleeveless dress. But this outfit is probably my favorite.

Currently Coveting: Black & White Stripes

Summer and stripes go together like peanut butter and jelly. They are a classic fashion statement that will never go out of style. One reason why we may gravitate towards stripes is because they remind us of how French women dress. What woman doesn’t want to be mistaken for a Parisian? Stripes are a very simple and flattering print to wear; you really can’t go wrong with them. When it comes to summertime, most of us gravitate towards the nautical look. Whether you are vacationing at the Cape or home in the city, wearing navy and white stripes is a summer must! Now, I was going to do a nautical Fourth of July post, but I had a baby instead. So, I have decided instead that I would explore a different side to stripes. Most of us shy away from black over the summer. After a long winter of wearing dark and dreary hues, you want to dress in bright colorful prints. I am here to tell you that black has just as much of a place in the warmer months as it does when it’s cold. I believe that black and white stripes are just as chic and sophisticated as the nautical navy and white version. I promise you won’t look like a referee! Instead, you will look polished and put together, which is all we can hope to achieve when it’s disgustingly humid out. Need a little more encouragement? Below are three ways I have paired black and white stripes together. Wear any of these outfits, and you will be mistaken for a street style pro!

Mixed Prints: Florals & Stripes

Florals and stripes are two very popular prints, especially during the spring and summer seasons.  I, for one, am a huge fan of stripes and I want to show you how exciting they can be when worn with floral prints.  I know that this concept can be overwhelming to some, but I am here to show you that there is nothing to be scared of.  There are plenty of understated and effortless ways to combine prints and I have put together three fabulous outfits that show you how!  Take a look and try them out.  Before you know it, you’ll think that florals and stripes go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Let’s start off slow with this first outfit.  For those of you who aren’t ready to make a big statement, I chose to make the floral print as the star and complement it with a striped accessory piece.  This way you can remove it and still look polished or wear it with pride.

Mixing Prints: Florals & Stripes 1. Juliet & Company – Forget Me Knot Earrings | 2. Vita Fede – Titan Bracelet | 3. Sole Society – Felicity Gladiator Sandal | 4. Mango – Cord Floral Dress | 5. Uniqlo – Navy Cardigan | 6. Rebecca Minkoff – Everywhere Canvas

Look number two is all about pulling off a feminine look with an edge.  Not only is this floral leather skirt edgy, but it is also cutout so the print won’t be too harsh when paired with a striped shirt.  Just because it’s warm out, doesn’t mean your leather favorites should be stored away.

Slide3

1. BaubleBar – Crystal Hera Collar | 2. Club Monaco – Nicolette Skirt | 3. TopShop – Sleeveless Stripe Shirt | 4. Gigi New York – Jenn Bucket Bag | 5. Steve Madden – Nobel Bootie

For the final outfit, I chose a fun, summery look perfect for a day in the park or brunch with friends.  Out of all three, this one makes the biggest statement.  Make sure that whichever floral print you choose to pair with your stripe, there should be a common color linking them together.

Slide2 1. KT Collection – Ipanema Turquoise Earrings | 2. Asos – Clutch with Tassle | 3. J.Crew – Aquatic Floral Blouse | 4. Zara – Striped Shorts | 5. Madewell – Jean Jacket | 6. Vince Camuto – Vestata Mule

Would love to hear from you what your favorite outfit is in the comments below.  If you decide to tackle this mixed print look on your own, keep in mind that balance is key.  No matter what, keep and open mind and don’t forget that in fashion, there are no rules.

Chic Outfits for Thanksgiving Day

It is almost hard to believe that Thanksgiving is a week away.  I, for one, could not be more excited.  Not only is it my favorite holiday, but it kicks off a fabulous month of holiday festivities.  Before Christmas madness begins, it’s a wonderful day to be with family and friends while eating mass amounts of stuffing and pumpkin pie.  This year, I will be heading to Washington DC to spend time with my husband’s family.  It’ll be nice to get out of the city for a couple of days and recharge the batteries.  As much as I enjoy being a guest, I look forward to the day when I get to be the hostess.  What about you; how will you be celebrating this year?

Blogger Collaboration: Not Over Overalls

FullSizeRender

(Left to Right)

A Sparkle Factor | The Rachel Ross | Me | Style Context

I cannot tell you how excited I am to finally share this post with you all.  Thanks to #ChicChat, a fashion chat group on Twitter, I have joined forces with these very talented bloggers to bring you a great outfit to inspire you.  Not only is this my first ever collaboration, but it is also the first time I have used myself as the model. I have wanted to do this for a while now, but I have never been 100% sure I was ready.  This week I stepped out my comfort zone and tried something new for you and I couldn’t be happier with the results!  But enough about that and back to the task at hand, this fabulous post.  It all happened one night during #ChicChat last month.  These lovely ladies and myself started a conversation about fashion trends that you either love or hate.  We decided then and there to collaborate on a story by taking a trend, in this case overalls, that we were on the fence about, and create our own outfit to show of how we’d wear it.  Will it turn us into believers or will we never speak of it again?   When I think of overalls, an image of me from when I was eight years old pops into my head.  I used to wear them all the time with a tee shirt and my hair in braided pigtails.  However, now that I am an adult, I am not sure that they fit my current style.   Could I find a way to style overalls and still look like a grown up?  The hardest part was finding the perfect pair, but once I did, the rest fell into place.   The key to styling overalls is to make sure the fit is flattering, you pair it with a feminine top like lace or stripes, and accessorize it with a structured bag and sleek gold jewelry.  It has been a fun collaboration, and it’s great to see how each of us chose to create a chic outfit. Take a look at how each one of us styled our overalls and find the perfect way that you can wear this trend.

The verdict is in.  Overalls are playful, comfortable, and a trend I could see myself wearing in the future.  I had a blast collaborating with these ladies and hope you enjoyed it too!   Head over to their blogs to see how they took on this challenge:  Stephanie at A Sparkle Factor | Rachel at The Rachel Ross | Diane at Style Context
