Get the Look: Reese Witherspoon

Today is the first post for the blog’s new section, “Get the Look”.  Like you, I often browse the Internet and magazines for inspiration on latest trends and new outfits to try.  Living in the city, I can find what I am looking for on the streets, but I always have my go-to celebrities whose style always speaks to me.  I recently stumbled upon this picture of Reese Witherspoon out and about and it immediately piqued my interest.  I am a huge fan of Reese’s preppy meets classic style.  Reese and I have very different body types, so as much as I love her style, I know we can’t always wear the same things.  This outfit however, would totally work for me.  I love the simplicity, color combo, and how classy this outfit is.   It is perfect for brunch in the city, shopping in the Hamptons, or cocktails on a summer night.  Below I have put together my take on this ensemble and I think it complements it well.  So tell me, where do you find your style inspiration?

Memorial Day Weekend Style

You guys, Memorial Day weekend is here!   This weekend kicks off summer and it is the prefect time to break in your warm-weather wardrobe.  There are so many fabulous styles to wear this summer.  From rompers, to cropped tops, to maxi dresses, to swimwear, I am so excited to start debuting my new finds.  Whether you are going out of town or staying in the city, have fun with your style by trying something new.  I, for one, am going to give culottes a try.  I was against them last year, but trends should be revisited.  If you’re going to the beach, I suggest you break out a new swimsuit and sunnies.  Don’t break the bank, but it’s fun to update summer must-haves at the beginning of the season.  Memorial Day weekend, for many, means traveling to some fabulous beach destination.  For me, it entails chilling in the city after everyone has flown the coop.  No matter your plans, I have put together my annual MDW post so that you have all of your outfit options covered.  Here are two outfits that I think are perfect for this weekend.  Whether you are playing on the beach, lounging by the pool, or on the rooftop for cocktails.  Of course, I had to feature a white dress.  This is the color for summer and what better time to wear it?

Weekend Style Guide

Just for kicks and giggles I decided to bring back a favorite of mine, my weekend style guides. I have always struggled with achieving the perfect casual outfit for my down time. I always feel more comfortable when dressed up and when the weekend rolls around I feel so sloppy. I love the idea of a basic white tee and jeans but I just don’t feel like myself in them. I am in desperate need of some inspiration. Usually, putting these mood boards together does the trick and jumpstarts my creativity. There is one store in particular that I am really drawn to at the moment. That store is Madewell. Have you been in lately? When putting together my research for this post, I gravitated to their casual designs. I feel that Madewell is the exact store I need to get me out of my weekend style rut. I mixed other brands in there as well and I am really excited about what I have found so far. If you too are seeking guidance, I hope this post gives you the ideas you’ve been looking for. So today, in lieu of my Weekly Finds, I have three fabulous outfits that will raise your weekend style game.

Florals for Spring

I know, I know, a story about floral prints for spring isn’t exactly groundbreaking.  But when it comes to spring, it’s really quite unavoidable.  Most people either love or hate them.  If you are in the latter camp, spring must be a very difficult time for you to shop.  There is a reason why floral prints are everywhere.  Florals are a classic design, and it is in the springtime where they really shine.  It’s not like it’s expected of us to wear them.  However, with beautiful colorful flowers blooming everywhere, it’s hard not to draw inspiration from them.  Now, there are some who deem the print to be boring and unoriginal.  I completely disagree and think, instead, that wearing them really embraces the season.  I love florals because they are feminine, pretty, and sophisticated.  You can go bold with a large abstract style, or soft with a smaller variation.  If you aren’t a fan but want to give them a try, pick a scarf with a floral pattern and ease your way in.  Before you know it, you’ll be wearing a dress covered in floral designs with matching shoes!  So, when you are doing your spring shopping, seriously keep florals in mind.  If you’re looking for some inspiration, hopefully these pieces will make you fall in love with the print all over again.  I made sure there was something here for all of your shopping needs!

3 Ways to Style A Chambray Shirt

A chambray shirt is one of those items that you must have in your closet.  I thought it would be easy to find one, but it can take awhile to find the perfect shade of chambray.  Whether you go light or dark, once you have found one, you will want to get the most wear out of it as possible. And trust me, the styling options are endless.  It can be worn with pants, skirts, shorts, and even as a layering piece over dresses.  Keep it simple by pairing it with white pants for a classic look or go outside the box and wear it with colorful patterns.  Also, I love to dress up a chambray shirt with a pencil or midi skirt.  Even though a chambray shirt can be worn all year round, during the spring/summer months are when it really shines.  It’s refreshing, light, and can be easily worn from day to night.  I can’t seem to stop purchasing this wardrobe essential, so you need to make sure you’re stocked with enough how-to options for styling it.  Ahead are three chic outfits that will make sure you get the most out of this shirt as possible.  With all of these style recycling tips, you’ll always have something to wear!

3 Ways to Wear Printed Pants

Whenever I see a pair of patterned pants in a store, many thoughts run through my head.   I want them!  I need them!   Will they make my hips look wider?  What will I wear with them?  The whole experience can be a bit overwhelming and in the end, the same thing always happens, I never buy them.  Most of the time, I never even try them on to give them a shot.  This has to end because I desperately want a pair of patterned pants for my wardrobe.  My style is classic minimalist, so I tend to stick to solid colors with an occasional stripped print every now and then.  I am not proud of this; I would like to venture out of my comfort zone more and try bold and daring prints.  So, now all that is left to do is to find the perfect pair of printed pants and style them accordingly.  These are a few things to keep in mind before wearing a pair of bold pants:

  1. The silhouette is everything.  I suggest a cigarette pant opposed to wide legged pants or culottes.  You want to have as little fabric as possible so that the pattern isn’t as overwhelming.  Proportions are everything.  Make sure if you do wear a wider leg, keep the top structured or tucked in.
  2. Tie your whole outfit together by choosing one color within the print and match it with your top.  This way you will have a color coordinated outfit that will look more complete and polished.  This can also pertain to your shoes and bag.
  3. Don’t go crazy with mixing and matching prints.  Keep it simple by wearing a solid color top.  Once you get comfortable, ease in by mixing the print with a striped top.  The important thing about wearing one or more prints is to make sure that you wear them rather them wearing you.  You don’t want your outfit to look too busy.  However, in order to embrace the playfulness of the pant, try a chunky necklace for a glamorous touch.

When putting together today’s style guide, I took all three of these tips into consideration.  Here are two/three outfits that I hope will inspire you to wear printed pants with confidence.

Wear Now & Later

Spring is creeping around the corner, and no one is happier about it than I am. Now, I know, we had a very mild winter, but there is nothing better than taking long walks outside, flowers blooming, and longer days. While we wait for warmer days, we need to start getting our closets prepared for a new season of fashion. All of your favorite stores are currently selling spring collections and this is the best time to shop. If you start shopping now, you’ll be sure to have a bigger selection and more sizes available to you. The only problem is that, at least where I live, it’s not quite warm enough to wear the newer clothes. March can still be cool and, as much as you want to wear lighter layers, you can’t just yet. However, I am so sick of turtlenecks, heavy coats, and tights. All I want to wear are my new purchases. That is why I am bringing back one of my favorite stories, Now vs. Later. This is when I choose three items that I love wearing for spring that, when paired well, can work for winter too. We are in that annoying transitional time of year when one day it’s hot and the next day it’s cold. The only way to survive is by layering, and I’ve become a pro at it.

WHITE JEANS

White jeans are my favorite because they can be paired with any color and style top. I really can’t wait any longer to wear them, so, before it gets warm, pair these jeans with a chunky sweater and your favorite jacket. Then, when the weather changes, wear it with a light blouse and sandals for a softer look.

Wear Now & Later

1. H&M – Melange Sweater | 2. Asos – Duffle Bag | 3. TopShop – White Jeans | 4. Jules Smith – Earrings | 5. Charles & Keith – Booties

GINGHAM DRESS
I recently bought this dress and I want to start wearing it as soon as possible. For the now outfit I styled it with a heavy coat, scarf, and booties. This will make you more comfortable until you can ditch the layers for flats and a lighter trench. If you’re still in need of layers, try wearing it over a light turtleneck.

Wear Now & Later

1. H&M – Jacket | 2. Charles & Keith – Slouchy Bag | 3. Madewell – Checked Shirt Dress | 4. Humble Chic – Infinity Scarf | 5. Nine West – Bootie

Wear Now & Later

1. Kate Spade New York – Square Studs | 2. Zara – City Bag | 3. Madewell – Checked Shirt Dress | 4. H&M – Trenchcoat | 5. Asos – Tie Up Flats

MIDI SKIRT

I love this floral midi skirt from Zara and I have a feeling that this won’t be its last appearance on the blog. There are so many different ways I want to wear this for spring: with a blouse, flats, heels, a chambray shirt. The list just goes on and on. But, in the meantime, a sweater or turtleneck would look great with it. I suggest you find some rich colors for some contrast, either with a navy bag or chocolate brown booties.

Wear Now & Later
