Color Crush: Summer Blues

Yesterday I talked about my go-to summer uniform.  Well today, I want to keep the conversation going by revealing more of my fashion favorites for summer.  It’s been a while since I’ve done a Color Crush post, but this one is very appropriate for July.  So let’s talk about my current favorite hue to wear:  blue.  I mean who doesn’t love blue?  There are so many different variations that you really can’t go wrong.  Pick navy for a nautical look, powder blue for a softer feminine style, or cobalt to stand out in the crowd.  I am always putting together nautical outfits.  I haven’t met a navy striped shirt that I didn’t like.  Blue makes me happy because it is calming and peaceful.  It reminds me of water and, whether you’re at the beach or stuck in the city, it should get you in a good mood for some summer fun.  Today, I rounded up my favorite blue looks and I hope it inspires you to wear it all season long.

Weekend Style Guide

Just for kicks and giggles I decided to bring back a favorite of mine, my weekend style guides. I have always struggled with achieving the perfect casual outfit for my down time. I always feel more comfortable when dressed up and when the weekend rolls around I feel so sloppy. I love the idea of a basic white tee and jeans but I just don’t feel like myself in them. I am in desperate need of some inspiration. Usually, putting these mood boards together does the trick and jumpstarts my creativity. There is one store in particular that I am really drawn to at the moment. That store is Madewell. Have you been in lately? When putting together my research for this post, I gravitated to their casual designs. I feel that Madewell is the exact store I need to get me out of my weekend style rut. I mixed other brands in there as well and I am really excited about what I have found so far. If you too are seeking guidance, I hope this post gives you the ideas you’ve been looking for. So today, in lieu of my Weekly Finds, I have three fabulous outfits that will raise your weekend style game.

There is something about the warmer weather that makes me gravitate towards festive patterns and fabrics.  I have always had a soft spot for embroidered garments, and there is no better time to wear them during the spring/summer season.  Blouses, skirts, and dresses all etched with detailed designs make me smile.  Often times when you think of embroidery, it conjures up visions of your grandmother’s furniture.  However, recently designers have taken a more modern approach and incorporated this art form into their collections in a youthful way.  A lot of times the embroidery is created on loose fitting garments.  While I rarely wear boho inspired clothing, there is something about these flowy decorated styles that look lovely.  Most of the pieces that I found had floral designs. I also loved the flamingo shoes below.  There are a lot of fun ways to wear this trend.  For one, embroidery on a white shirt or blouse really elevates the look.  Secondly, I love to carry embroidered bags.  It’s a fun way to bring color and texture to your outfit.  I will definitely be giving this trend a try this season, but first I needed to round up my favorites to decide how I’ll be wearing it.  Which one of these do you want to add to your spring/summer wardrobe?

Currently Coveting: Blue Suede Shoes

Recently I did a bit of spring cleaning and discovered something shocking: I own only neutral colored shoes.  While looking at a sea of shoes all in black, cognac, and tan hues, I made a promise to myself that I would fix this problem.  We all get in our style ruts because we know what we like and what looks good.  However, even though black and nude shoes are classic and always in season, I want to mix it up.  I love to wear color but I usually reserve it to my clothing and not accessories.  While researching this season’s collections, I have found that there are a lot of blue shoes out there, and I was immediately inspired.  Blue is a great color, especially since I am very much drawn to the nautical look.  When styling an outfit with blue shoes, the sky is the limit.  It pairs fabulously with other colors like brown, white, blush, khaki, and coral.  It goes without saying that this color is perfect for your spring looks.  I have put together a few of my favorite blue suede shoes and would love your help in finding the perfect pair.  Once I do, I can move on to another color and broaden my horizons even more.  I have to say, I am a bit partial to the powder blue shoes but I really love all of these.  It’s so hard to decide on just one.  On another note, if you are looking for spring cleaning tips, check out this post.  It’s always a good idea to do this a couple times a year. I always feel like a new person when it’s done.   Now after organizing and purging my closet of old items, I have room for new stuff like these fabulous shoes!

3 Ways to Style A Chambray Shirt

A chambray shirt is one of those items that you must have in your closet.  I thought it would be easy to find one, but it can take awhile to find the perfect shade of chambray.  Whether you go light or dark, once you have found one, you will want to get the most wear out of it as possible. And trust me, the styling options are endless.  It can be worn with pants, skirts, shorts, and even as a layering piece over dresses.  Keep it simple by pairing it with white pants for a classic look or go outside the box and wear it with colorful patterns.  Also, I love to dress up a chambray shirt with a pencil or midi skirt.  Even though a chambray shirt can be worn all year round, during the spring/summer months are when it really shines.  It’s refreshing, light, and can be easily worn from day to night.  I can’t seem to stop purchasing this wardrobe essential, so you need to make sure you’re stocked with enough how-to options for styling it.  Ahead are three chic outfits that will make sure you get the most out of this shirt as possible.  With all of these style recycling tips, you’ll always have something to wear!

3 Ways to Wear Printed Pants

Whenever I see a pair of patterned pants in a store, many thoughts run through my head.   I want them!  I need them!   Will they make my hips look wider?  What will I wear with them?  The whole experience can be a bit overwhelming and in the end, the same thing always happens, I never buy them.  Most of the time, I never even try them on to give them a shot.  This has to end because I desperately want a pair of patterned pants for my wardrobe.  My style is classic minimalist, so I tend to stick to solid colors with an occasional stripped print every now and then.  I am not proud of this; I would like to venture out of my comfort zone more and try bold and daring prints.  So, now all that is left to do is to find the perfect pair of printed pants and style them accordingly.  These are a few things to keep in mind before wearing a pair of bold pants:

  1. The silhouette is everything.  I suggest a cigarette pant opposed to wide legged pants or culottes.  You want to have as little fabric as possible so that the pattern isn’t as overwhelming.  Proportions are everything.  Make sure if you do wear a wider leg, keep the top structured or tucked in.
  2. Tie your whole outfit together by choosing one color within the print and match it with your top.  This way you will have a color coordinated outfit that will look more complete and polished.  This can also pertain to your shoes and bag.
  3. Don’t go crazy with mixing and matching prints.  Keep it simple by wearing a solid color top.  Once you get comfortable, ease in by mixing the print with a striped top.  The important thing about wearing one or more prints is to make sure that you wear them rather them wearing you.  You don’t want your outfit to look too busy.  However, in order to embrace the playfulness of the pant, try a chunky necklace for a glamorous touch.

When putting together today’s style guide, I took all three of these tips into consideration.  Here are two/three outfits that I hope will inspire you to wear printed pants with confidence.
