Beat the Heat With Culottes

When you’re walking on the city streets or waiting on the subway platform for the train, it is unbearable to wear jeans.  I know that we all love jeans because they go with everything, but comfort is key for beating the heat.  I may wear a light jean jacket for those rare cool summer evenings.  Other than that, denim is high on my least-friendly-summer fabrics.  Thankfully, for those days where pants are necessary, there are several options that are lightweight and comfortable.  My favorite style at the moment is culottes.  They are chic, comfy, and provide coverage without being too constricting.  It took me awhile to get on the culottes bandwagon because I thought they aren’t for everybody.  However, I think that no matter your body type, you can pull them off with confidence if you pair them with the right ensemble.  The best way to style culottes is to wear them like an a-line skirt. Tuck in a blouse or go bold with a crop top, and then finish them off with heels for some height (especially for you petite ladies).  Don’t go too crazy; stick to basic colors like black, navy, or soft neutrals. If you’re still on the fence, try a longer pair and they will appear more like a wide legged pant.  I understand that styling these pants can be tricky, but I have your back.  Whether you’re wearing your culottes on a night out, for a weekend brunch, or to work (yes, it’s possible), here are 3 outfits to inspire you.  Summer is sticking around for another month, but who knows how long this sweltering weather will last.  One thing for sure, this pant will keep you cool, stylish, and be a great transition piece for fall.   Which one of these outfits do you like best?  I just can’t decide!

Color Crush: Summer Blues

Yesterday I talked about my go-to summer uniform.  Well today, I want to keep the conversation going by revealing more of my fashion favorites for summer.  It’s been a while since I’ve done a Color Crush post, but this one is very appropriate for July.  So let’s talk about my current favorite hue to wear:  blue.  I mean who doesn’t love blue?  There are so many different variations that you really can’t go wrong.  Pick navy for a nautical look, powder blue for a softer feminine style, or cobalt to stand out in the crowd.  I am always putting together nautical outfits.  I haven’t met a navy striped shirt that I didn’t like.  Blue makes me happy because it is calming and peaceful.  It reminds me of water and, whether you’re at the beach or stuck in the city, it should get you in a good mood for some summer fun.  Today, I rounded up my favorite blue looks and I hope it inspires you to wear it all season long.

Weekend Style Guide

Just for kicks and giggles I decided to bring back a favorite of mine, my weekend style guides. I have always struggled with achieving the perfect casual outfit for my down time. I always feel more comfortable when dressed up and when the weekend rolls around I feel so sloppy. I love the idea of a basic white tee and jeans but I just don’t feel like myself in them. I am in desperate need of some inspiration. Usually, putting these mood boards together does the trick and jumpstarts my creativity. There is one store in particular that I am really drawn to at the moment. That store is Madewell. Have you been in lately? When putting together my research for this post, I gravitated to their casual designs. I feel that Madewell is the exact store I need to get me out of my weekend style rut. I mixed other brands in there as well and I am really excited about what I have found so far. If you too are seeking guidance, I hope this post gives you the ideas you’ve been looking for. So today, in lieu of my Weekly Finds, I have three fabulous outfits that will raise your weekend style game.

Currently Coveting: Embroidered Detail

There is something about the warmer weather that makes me gravitate towards festive patterns and fabrics.  I have always had a soft spot for embroidered garments, and there is no better time to wear them during the spring/summer season.  Blouses, skirts, and dresses all etched with detailed designs make me smile.  Often times when you think of embroidery, it conjures up visions of your grandmother’s furniture.  However, recently designers have taken a more modern approach and incorporated this art form into their collections in a youthful way.  A lot of times the embroidery is created on loose fitting garments.  While I rarely wear boho inspired clothing, there is something about these flowy decorated styles that look lovely.  Most of the pieces that I found had floral designs. I also loved the flamingo shoes below.  There are a lot of fun ways to wear this trend.  For one, embroidery on a white shirt or blouse really elevates the look.  Secondly, I love to carry embroidered bags.  It’s a fun way to bring color and texture to your outfit.  I will definitely be giving this trend a try this season, but first I needed to round up my favorites to decide how I’ll be wearing it.  Which one of these do you want to add to your spring/summer wardrobe?

12 Dresses for Spring

After a long winter of covering up, it’s that glorious time of year when we can wear dresses with bare legs!  It’s a liberating feeling that I cannot wait to experience.  Every girl needs that secret style weapon she can use when she needs to look her best.  For me that is a dress!  There is nothing out there that makes me feel as good as I do when I have a dress on.  I wear them year round, even when it’s below zero outside.  Of course I get the most enjoyment out of the style when it’s warmer.  To me, there is nothing more freeing then wearing a dress.  It definitely puts an extra pep in my step and my confidence soars.  Not only is it comfortable, when it is accessorized properly, it is appropriate for work, nightlife, and chic events.  Basically, it is the most versatile piece that I have in my closet, and it’s a rare day when I’m not wearing one.  In my opinion, everyone needs a throw-on-and-go dress.  It’s an easy, one-piece outfit that you can just throw on when you need to leave the house in a pinch.  Not only are dresses easy to wear, but also the style options are endless due to the variety of silhouettes, patterns, and colors.  You can find a dress that is sexy, edgy, feminine, sophisticated, or casual.  There is a style for anyone to embrace, rock, and love.  You just need to discover the dress of your dreams, and I suggest that you start with these fabulous finds.  I am always on the lookout for new dresses, so it wasn’t hard for me to do the research for this post.  Now that it is spring, there are so many choices out there for any and all occasions.  As for me, I am looking for a great weekend worthy shift dress that is casual but not frumpy.  Happy shopping and I can’t wait to hear from you which of these is your favorite!

Weekend Trip Packing Essentials

Boy is it hot outside!  I don’t know about you, but I am getting the heck out of dodge this weekend.  It is way too hot to stay in the concrete jungle of New York City.  Instead, I am taking baby Cooper, dog, and husband out of town, to my in-laws’ home, to enjoy some poolside fun.  It is going to be Cooper’s first car ride and I even got him a little swimsuit for the pool.   The weekend is sure going to be an adventure; hopefully one that we’ll look back fondly on.  One good thing that has come out of my weekend plans is that it has inspired today’s post.  So, you tell me, what are the essential items that you pack for a weekend getaway?  I, for one, am guilty of over packing. I never know what I am going to want.   However, no matter how tempting it is, a weekend really isn’t long enough to take everything you own.  That is why I have gotten used to narrowing it down to just a few essential items that will go well together.  When packing, you have to think of what you actually need, not what you want.  Most importantly, you have to always be prepared for any type of activity, party, or weather.  So here is what I pack for my weekend trips.

1.  The top of my list is a good overnight bag.  You want it to be roomy but not so big that you bring too much stuff.  I personally love this bag by Everlane.  It is chic for any type of destination.

2.  I am obsessed with Eberjey’s PJ sets and I don’t like to leave home without them.  This set is both comfortable and cool for a warm summer night in the country

3.  I love Kiehl’s facial cleanser and moisturizer.  I use them every night and, even though I am on vacation, it’s still important to keep up with your routines.

4.  Taking pictures are a must when you’re traveling and I can’t get enough of this adorable Polaroid camera.  Plus, Polaroids are infinitely more fun than taking pictures on your phone.

5.  Do I really have to explain these adorable sunnies?  I didn’t think so!

6. & 7.  His and Her toiletry bags are very important.  I love my husband, but I don’t want to share when it comes to carrying my favorite make up and skin care products.

8.  This Clare V. clutch is my absolute favorite every day bag.  It can be worn both day and night so it is perfect for traveling.  I am all for taking more than one handbag with you, but if you are only going to bring one, make it this beauty!

9.  A pretty summer dress is a must, and what is more stylish than a crisp white wrap dress?  A LWD (little white dress) is very important for your summer wardrobe. I highly suggest you invest in one.

10.  Even more classic than a LWD are nude heeled sandals.  They go with everything and can be worn day or night.

11.  I tend to wear a lot of white and blue in the summer, which is why I pack at least one pop of color.  This coral camisole is the perfect choice.

12.  I prefer wearing dresses, but it can get cool at nights, so I always pack a pair of boyfriend jeans.  They aren’t too warm and they can be a nice casual option for hanging out between activities.

13. When you’re out in your LWD and nude sandals and the sun goes down, just throw on your jean jacket for some warmth.  I always like to be prepared and, in the summer, I never leave home without a jean jacket.

14.  You need an everyday shoe, and that is why I always pack my favorite pair of Converse sneakers. They go with everything, are super comfortable, and they don’t take up a lot of room. It’s a win-win!

That does it. I would love to hear from you in the comments below what you like to pack for your trips. Happy weekend!

Effortless Summer Style: Sweaters & Shorts

One of my favorite summer outfits is a lightweight sweater over a pair of shorts.  There is something so appealing about this effortlessly relaxed style that I can’t enough of.   You may be thinking that it is way too hot and humid to be wearing long sleeves, but since everywhere you go has the AC blasting, it’s actually pretty comfortable.  This chic and simple ensemble is perfect for any summer event whether you’re going to a BBQ, throwing it over your bathing suit, or spending a weekend in the city.  Play around with the style by wearing flat gladiator sandals by day and sexy high heels by night.  Ready to try out my favorite summer outfit?  Then take a look at these sweater and short combinations I put together below.  There are so many options out there, and best thing is that you can keep wearing it in the early fall.  I can’t wait to hear how you style this look yourself!
