Beat the Heat With Culottes

When you’re walking on the city streets or waiting on the subway platform for the train, it is unbearable to wear jeans.  I know that we all love jeans because they go with everything, but comfort is key for beating the heat.  I may wear a light jean jacket for those rare cool summer evenings.  Other than that, denim is high on my least-friendly-summer fabrics.  Thankfully, for those days where pants are necessary, there are several options that are lightweight and comfortable.  My favorite style at the moment is culottes.  They are chic, comfy, and provide coverage without being too constricting.  It took me awhile to get on the culottes bandwagon because I thought they aren’t for everybody.  However, I think that no matter your body type, you can pull them off with confidence if you pair them with the right ensemble.  The best way to style culottes is to wear them like an a-line skirt. Tuck in a blouse or go bold with a crop top, and then finish them off with heels for some height (especially for you petite ladies).  Don’t go too crazy; stick to basic colors like black, navy, or soft neutrals. If you’re still on the fence, try a longer pair and they will appear more like a wide legged pant.  I understand that styling these pants can be tricky, but I have your back.  Whether you’re wearing your culottes on a night out, for a weekend brunch, or to work (yes, it’s possible), here are 3 outfits to inspire you.  Summer is sticking around for another month, but who knows how long this sweltering weather will last.  One thing for sure, this pant will keep you cool, stylish, and be a great transition piece for fall.   Which one of these outfits do you like best?  I just can’t decide!

Color Crush: Summer Blues

Yesterday I talked about my go-to summer uniform.  Well today, I want to keep the conversation going by revealing more of my fashion favorites for summer.  It’s been a while since I’ve done a Color Crush post, but this one is very appropriate for July.  So let’s talk about my current favorite hue to wear:  blue.  I mean who doesn’t love blue?  There are so many different variations that you really can’t go wrong.  Pick navy for a nautical look, powder blue for a softer feminine style, or cobalt to stand out in the crowd.  I am always putting together nautical outfits.  I haven’t met a navy striped shirt that I didn’t like.  Blue makes me happy because it is calming and peaceful.  It reminds me of water and, whether you’re at the beach or stuck in the city, it should get you in a good mood for some summer fun.  Today, I rounded up my favorite blue looks and I hope it inspires you to wear it all season long.

Currently Coveting: Embroidered Detail

There is something about the warmer weather that makes me gravitate towards festive patterns and fabrics.  I have always had a soft spot for embroidered garments, and there is no better time to wear them during the spring/summer season.  Blouses, skirts, and dresses all etched with detailed designs make me smile.  Often times when you think of embroidery, it conjures up visions of your grandmother’s furniture.  However, recently designers have taken a more modern approach and incorporated this art form into their collections in a youthful way.  A lot of times the embroidery is created on loose fitting garments.  While I rarely wear boho inspired clothing, there is something about these flowy decorated styles that look lovely.  Most of the pieces that I found had floral designs. I also loved the flamingo shoes below.  There are a lot of fun ways to wear this trend.  For one, embroidery on a white shirt or blouse really elevates the look.  Secondly, I love to carry embroidered bags.  It’s a fun way to bring color and texture to your outfit.  I will definitely be giving this trend a try this season, but first I needed to round up my favorites to decide how I’ll be wearing it.  Which one of these do you want to add to your spring/summer wardrobe?

12 Dresses for Spring

After a long winter of covering up, it’s that glorious time of year when we can wear dresses with bare legs!  It’s a liberating feeling that I cannot wait to experience.  Every girl needs that secret style weapon she can use when she needs to look her best.  For me that is a dress!  There is nothing out there that makes me feel as good as I do when I have a dress on.  I wear them year round, even when it’s below zero outside.  Of course I get the most enjoyment out of the style when it’s warmer.  To me, there is nothing more freeing then wearing a dress.  It definitely puts an extra pep in my step and my confidence soars.  Not only is it comfortable, when it is accessorized properly, it is appropriate for work, nightlife, and chic events.  Basically, it is the most versatile piece that I have in my closet, and it’s a rare day when I’m not wearing one.  In my opinion, everyone needs a throw-on-and-go dress.  It’s an easy, one-piece outfit that you can just throw on when you need to leave the house in a pinch.  Not only are dresses easy to wear, but also the style options are endless due to the variety of silhouettes, patterns, and colors.  You can find a dress that is sexy, edgy, feminine, sophisticated, or casual.  There is a style for anyone to embrace, rock, and love.  You just need to discover the dress of your dreams, and I suggest that you start with these fabulous finds.  I am always on the lookout for new dresses, so it wasn’t hard for me to do the research for this post.  Now that it is spring, there are so many choices out there for any and all occasions.  As for me, I am looking for a great weekend worthy shift dress that is casual but not frumpy.  Happy shopping and I can’t wait to hear from you which of these is your favorite!

Color Crush: Blush

In the summertime, I always gravitate to lightweight, pale-colored clothing.   This season is no different because I have a serious crush on blush. It is a perfect color for summer, even though I wear it all-year round, because it is a soft, light, and feminine color. When it is super hot outside, you don’t want to be in a dark color, and blush is a great way to cool things down. It has been a very popular color for the past couple of seasons and it is not losing steam anytime soon. With most pink hues, you run the risk of looking too Elle Woods or like a bottle of Pepto Bismol. However, blush is such a subtle version of pink that you can’t go wrong with either wearing it as an accent or the star. When styling your favorite blush pieces, keep in mind that it works well paired with navy, white, nude, or grey. If you love blush but don’t want to look too girly, try pairing it with a darker hue like navy or brown; it really changes the look. My last color crush was all about wearing white head-to-toe. I know that some of my readers didn’t like the idea of it, so wearing an all blush ensemble is a great compromise. If I can’t convince you, maybe these fabulous styles can? In this roundup, I have selected a few items that have been on my wish list for a while now. That’s no surprise though; I am currently very attracted to this color and believe that it should be on your top of your list for summer fashion must-haves!

Mixed Prints: Florals & Stripes

Florals and stripes are two very popular prints, especially during the spring and summer seasons.  I, for one, am a huge fan of stripes and I want to show you how exciting they can be when worn with floral prints.  I know that this concept can be overwhelming to some, but I am here to show you that there is nothing to be scared of.  There are plenty of understated and effortless ways to combine prints and I have put together three fabulous outfits that show you how!  Take a look and try them out.  Before you know it, you’ll think that florals and stripes go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Let’s start off slow with this first outfit.  For those of you who aren’t ready to make a big statement, I chose to make the floral print as the star and complement it with a striped accessory piece.  This way you can remove it and still look polished or wear it with pride.

Mixing Prints: Florals & Stripes 1. Juliet & Company – Forget Me Knot Earrings | 2. Vita Fede – Titan Bracelet | 3. Sole Society – Felicity Gladiator Sandal | 4. Mango – Cord Floral Dress | 5. Uniqlo – Navy Cardigan | 6. Rebecca Minkoff – Everywhere Canvas

Look number two is all about pulling off a feminine look with an edge.  Not only is this floral leather skirt edgy, but it is also cutout so the print won’t be too harsh when paired with a striped shirt.  Just because it’s warm out, doesn’t mean your leather favorites should be stored away.

1. BaubleBar – Crystal Hera Collar | 2. Club Monaco – Nicolette Skirt | 3. TopShop – Sleeveless Stripe Shirt | 4. Gigi New York – Jenn Bucket Bag | 5. Steve Madden – Nobel Bootie

For the final outfit, I chose a fun, summery look perfect for a day in the park or brunch with friends.  Out of all three, this one makes the biggest statement.  Make sure that whichever floral print you choose to pair with your stripe, there should be a common color linking them together.

Slide2 1. KT Collection – Ipanema Turquoise Earrings | 2. Asos – Clutch with Tassle | 3. J.Crew – Aquatic Floral Blouse | 4. Zara – Striped Shorts | 5. Madewell – Jean Jacket | 6. Vince Camuto – Vestata Mule

Would love to hear from you what your favorite outfit is in the comments below.  If you decide to tackle this mixed print look on your own, keep in mind that balance is key.  No matter what, keep and open mind and don’t forget that in fashion, there are no rules.
